Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the The NeverEnding Story was released in 1984 and starred a talented young cast: Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, Barret Oliver as Bastian, and Tami Stronach as the Empress. Shot largely in Germany during one of their hottest summers in decades, the story revolves mainly around these three characters.
Bastian is a young boy coping with his mom’s death. On his way to school one day, he’s chased by bullies and ducks into a book shop, where he happens upon a book with a strange symbol on the cover. The shop owner warns him that it’s no ordinary book; unlike other stories where you leave the action as soon as you stop reading, this one is not as easy to walk away from.
The NeverEnding Story is bursting with captivating characters following Atreyu throughout his journey, with the added dimension of good versus evil into the storyline. Looking back it was a promise of something magical being just on the horizon that appealed to me too though, and the idea that even a regular kid could do amazing things.
I finally watched the film again last night and I was surprised by how well it holds up. True, you have to look past some extremely…emphatic acting, and Falkor is slightly creepy now that I’m older, but most importantly, watching it now gave me a completely different experience, not just an exercise in nostalgia.
The Auryn is still the coolest piece of fantasy jewelry ever. It doesn’t need to be cast into a volcano, it won’t screw up any time streams, and it doesn’t require a piece of your soul. It simply functions as an elegant symbol of eternal return and interconnections, and occasionally mystically guides you to the Childlike Empress. No big deal.
So what are the actors doing 30 years on?
Barret Oliver’s acting career didn’t last too long after The Neverending Story, but he didn’t exactly fade into obscurity, either. He has a few roles in Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, D.A.R.Y.L., and Cocoon but doesn’t have an acting credit to his name since 1989.
But there’s more to life than acting, and Oliver picked up photography both as a hobby and a professional endeavor. Oliver now teaches photography in Los Angeles and released a book on photography called A History Of The Woodburytype.
After playing Atreyu – pretty much the coolest little kid role in the history of cinema Noah Hathaway had some minor television appearances before landing the starring roll in the 1986 movie Troll. He then went quiet in Hollwood and got his black belts in Tang Soo Do and Shotokan Karate in addition to trying to set up his own chopper shop on the west coast.
Appearing in The Neverending Story was the first and last acting role for Tami Stronach. It turns out that Tami is really a dancer by trade and has been dancing since she was a child. In 1996, she joined the U.S. based Israeli dance troupe the Neta Dance Company, and she now has her own dance company in Brooklyn.
